IGIC Geomentoring Project collaboration with Cedar Falls 4th Grade Teachers

Posted April 20, 2015, 4:24 p.m.

The GeoTREE Center and the Geographic Alliance of Iowa, both based in the UNI Geography Department, collaborated on a Iowa Geographic Information Council funded geomentoring mini-grant. Jacob Thiele, a senior undergraduate Social Sciences Education major, worked with GeoTREE and GAI to develop a series of story maps which were used to supplement materials being used by 4th grade teachers in the Cedar Falls School District. The story maps helped to visualize and teach regional geography of the United States. 4th grade teachers from Orchard Hill, Southdale, and Hansen Elementary schools used these story maps and found them to be useful. Some comments from 4th Grade students from Hansen Elementary included 'They help you figure out where important places are', 'the pictures help me to understand better', and 'I like how some videos, some have pictures, and others are interesting to read about'.

Check USA Regional Story Maps if you would like to get the links to the story maps.
